Describing and retrieving photos using RDF and HTTP

W3C has published a technical recommendation in 2000, which allows to comment JPEG images with an XML-style inline-comment on http://www.w3.org/TR/photo-rdf/. They offer a Java-based GUI to configure your images too.

On the other hand, I wrote an additional feature in PHP to read out this comment from images on your server. It is up to you to XSLT it to your image ALT-tag or HREF-title. It is part of the PHP PEAR repository and no special extension is needed.

PDF as a future carrier for XML documents?

I tried out Adobe's PDF to XML conversion. Being able to use this functionality, you will need to download two files:

- SaveAsXMLPlugIn_beta2.exe [Info]
- MakeAccessiblePlugIn.exe [Info]

Since Adobe introduced "Tagged Adobe PDF", which adds basically content structure to the file, PDF documents will be convertible more easy to XML and even RTF.

BNC AG has installed a Laserlink at the University of Bern. The connection offers a 100Mbit/s transfer rate, which represents a good alternative to a fiber link.
