Crypto Law Survey
@ 12:00:00

Crypto Law Survey [1] is a survey of existing and proposed laws and regulations on cryptography - systems used for protecting information against unauthorized access.

So if you want to stunnel from France to England, one need to check if there are restrictions on cypher
strength by choosing weaker algorithms.

Example for allowed 40bit crypto:
fritz$ openssl ciphers -v EXPORT40

For Switzerland:
Crypto import is not controlled. Import certificates will be given if the country of origin requires this.
The export of cryptography is regulated by the Goods Control Decree of 25 June 1997 (Verordnung über die Aus-, Ein- und Durchfuhr zivil und militärisch verwendbarer Güter sowie besonderer militärischer Güter) [2].

Imagemagick as PHP extension on Windows

Recently, a php_imagick.dll has been released [1]. I downloaded the Imagemagick binary for Windows and installed it [2]. Then I copied all CORE_*.dll files to winntsystem32 and put an extension=php_imagick.dll in the php.ini. That got imagick running as extension in PHP, as far as I could see in phpinfo().

So if You can have a look at it, the developpers will appreciate any comments of running systems, since this is all EXPERIMENTAL yet [3].

Gait recognition - a method against crime?
@ 12:00:00

While googeling around for "Video Motion Capture" I came across some interesting discussion on that matter [1]. Chris Bregler [2] actually demonstrates in a video, how far those methodes already are [3].
The more appropriate expression for "how people walk" is "gait" or less specific as "gesture" [4]. Jeffrey E. Boyd is working on a Camera Mark-up Language "CaML", giving a demo of a client in action using CaML [5]. Further, we will not forget about what Microsoft is researching [6]. Apart from the modem that one probably won't need and a disk that is too small, this sounds quite reasonable. Is it the OS, that "forces" such a low price?

A brainfuck interpreter in PHP
@ 12:00:00

Nono, no dirty talking here; just reproducing naming excrescence in technology. Brainfuck [1] is a turing-complete programming language written by Urban Müller around 1993 [2]. The cool thing about it is its size; the initial compiler was only 240 Bytes in size.

Short: 240 byte compiler. Fun, with src. OS 2.0
Type: dev/lang
Uploader: umueller@amiga.physik.unizh.ch

The brainfuck compiler knows the following instructions:

Cmd Effect
--- ------
+ Increases element under pointer
- Decrases element under pointer
> Increases pointer
< Decreases pointer
[ Starts loop, flag under pointer
] Indicates end of loop
. Outputs ASCII code under pointer
, Reads char and stores ASCII under ptr

Who can program anything useful with it? :)

There is a PHP interpreter for Brainfuck available now [3]. Just play around!

Some more background on BF and Turing is available [4].

File indexing made with Swish-E
@ 12:00:00

File indexing is a comfortable thing. I used it to index a file repository of about 14'000 html files at a size of 370MB. I was looking for an indexing machine making its index available either through scripting language available on a webserver and as a simple commandline interface. Swish-E [1] seemed to be the right thing. Latest versions come with a self-installing archive. The indexing of a directory is as simple as:

c:\>set PATH=%PATH%;c:\programme\swish-e
c:\somedir>swish-e -i .
c:\somedir>swish-e -w "word" -f index.swish-e

That is it. The most simple search in PHP using Swish-E is probably something like

<?php
system('swish-e -w "word" -f index.swish-e' );
?>

A handy class written in PHP [2] interfaces the generated index file, which is in this case nearly 80MB, and outputs the search result to the browser.

Getting all installation files for IE6 SP1
@ 12:00:00

There is a way to get all files downloaded first, while the servicepack [1] might be installed later on:

"C:\Temp\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"
Call that line from Start->Command and leave all the quotes as they are. That's it.

HTML To PDF Conversion with PHP

Jason Rust has written a PHP wrapper around a Perl tool called "html2ps" [1] to generate PS files from HTML and interfacing Ghostscript on the other hand to convert the PS file to a PDF [2].
It hardly works on Windows; pretty easy on Linux.

Another way to convert simple HTML to PDF is still the fabulous PHP class by Olivier [3], starting with there tutorial 6.

CSFB to be engaged in saving US Airways
@ 12:00:00

Credit Suisse First Bosten and Bank of America are said to be engaged in financing US Airways to prevent from grounding.

"Monday the court approved $500 million in debtor financing from a group led by Credit Suisse First Boston and Bank of America. It also ended leases on 33 aircraft no longer used by the carrier. Company attorneys also revealed that top management at the carrier would be taking 20 percent pay cuts."

Well, it definitely took CSFB much longer to be engaged in helping the old Swissair, what finally ended up in a desaster.
